Economy Top Issue For Illinois Voters; Many Not Enthused With Choices, Poll Finds

CHICAGO (CBS) -- As Illinois voters headed to the polls on Tuesday, what was on their minds?

According to exit poll results, 56 percent said the economy was the most important issue facing the country. That was followed by immigration (16 percent); foreign policy (12 percent) and terrorism (12 percent).

When asked which qualities mattered most when casting a vote, 46 percent said experience and good judgment, 37 percent said a candidate who could bring about change. Only 15 percent said a candidate who "cares about people like me."

A total of 60 percent of the voters said they had made up their mind before September, while 22 percent decided in the past two months. About 15 percent said "in the last few days."

In other words, voters had their minds made up long before the second investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails or the lewd recordings of Donald Trump.

Overall, the polling found that voters were not particularly enthusiastic about who they were supporting. Only 36 percent said they strongly supported their choice.

A majority of voters also gave President Obama high marks, with 58 percent saying they approve of his performance.

CBS 2's exit poll results were based on answers from 900 voters around the sate.
