Early Morning Home Invasion Results In Victim Stabbed

CHICAGO (CBS) – A victim was stabbed early Wednesday morning during a home invasion in Richton Park.

It started as a home invasion of the six-story, Park Tower apartment complex in Richton Park, located at 3905 Tower Dr., just before 5 a.m. A couple woke up to an unknown black male inside their bedroom. When the male resident confronted the intruder, he was stabbed several times and the attacker fled the scene, CBS 2's Sandra Torres reports.

The victim was treated at the scene, before being rushed to the hospital. Police said the victim, although with many stab wounds, survived.

It appears the victims had left the door to their first-floor balcony unlocked, police said. That is how the intruder got in.

The victim did not know his attacker. Investigators believe the act was random and are warning residents to stay alert.

"We do have extra patrols," said Richton Park Police Chief, Elvia Williams. "I want people to feel safe, but keep their homes secure when sleeping."

Other residents of the apartment complex are not surprised about the attack, especially because of the way the intruder got in.

"Its always good to secure doors when you're on a first floor," said neighbor, Tony Savage. "If not, it's like asking them to come on in"

Earlier Wednesday morning, officers tried locating the suspect using K-9 units, but had no luck.

Richton Park detectives are still investigating, with the help of Park Forest police.

No one is in custody. Police were given a vague description of the suspect and are asking anyone with information on this attack to contact Detective Andrew Derewonko at 708-283-6393 x 436.
