Durbin Wants Everest Students To Transfer To Community Colleges

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Facing a probe from federal regulators, a for-profit education company that runs six college campuses in the Chicago area is looking to sell most of its schools.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports government regulators have been cracking down on the operations of Corinthian Colleges Inc., which has been accused of altering grades and attendance records; and falsifying job placement data.

Corinthian operates Everest College, which has five campuses in the Chicago suburbs and one in Merrillville, Ind.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin has urged the 3,300 students at Everest campuses in the Chicago area to transfer to local community college, and wants Corinthian to stop enrolling students.

The senator wants to make sure Everest students aren't left high and dry as campuses are sold or closed, and are not recruited by other for-profit colleges.
