Duckworth Will Launch U.S. Senate Bid Next Week: Report
(CBS) – Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth will announce a U.S. Senate bid early next week in hopes of unseating incumbent Republican Mark Kirk, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.
Democrat Duckworth is raising money and tells supporters in letters she knows in her "gut" she can win, the report said. A fundraising event was planned for Monday at the Hancock Center.
Spokespersons for the war veteran, who recently returned from maternity leave, did not immediately respond to inquiries from CBS 2.
Kirk, like Duckworth, has military experience. And like Duckworth, he has rebounded from physical challenges.
A Kirk spokesperson distributed an email statement Friday afternoon, in the wake of the Sun-Times report.
"Senator Mark Kirk is an independent voice for Illinois and is proud of his bipartisan record of achievement in the United States Senate," the statement said. "While he looks forward to a vigorous campaign, the Senator believes there will be plenty of time for politics, and he is focused on fighting for veterans."
