Driver Critically Injured After Car Struck By Metra Train
(CBS) -- Round Lake Police say a driver trying to beat the train got hit by a Metra commuter train carrying dozens of Lollapalooza fans.
Investigators say the crash happened at about 1:45 a.m. Village of Round Lake Police Chief George Filenco says the train was traveling northwest when it struck a driver who apparently tried to bypass the railroad gates at Route 134 and Porter Drive.
"Inside the vehicle we found a 46-year-old male who appeared to be conscious and alert," Fileco said. "However, he was trapped in the vehicle."
It took an hour for first responders to get the driver out of the car. He remains in critical condition at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Police think alcohol was involved in the crash. None of the 50 people aboard the Metra train were injured.
