Driver Charged In Hit-And-Run Death Of Forest Park Cyclist

FOREST PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- A Berwyn man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a bicyclist in Forest Park last week.

Jeffery Schultz, 40, was riding his bike home on Harlem Avenue near 14th Street around 11 p.m. Saturday, when a car struck him from behind about a block away from his townhouse.

Witnesses said the car was going as fast as 50 mph in a 35 mph zone, and fled the scene after sending Schultz flying through the air, and onto the sidewalk. Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found the car that struck Schultz in nearby Berwyn shortly after the crash.

On Tuesday, Forest Park police said they had begun questioning a person of interest in the case. On Thursday, they charged 21-year-old Joel Mendoza of Berwyn with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Mendoza was due for a bond hearing at the Maywood Courthouse on Thursday.
