Drew Peterson To Appear In Court Tuesday In Murder For Hire Plot
(CBS) -- The former Bolingbrook cop convicted of killing one wife and suspected in the disappearance of another heads back to court Tuesday, reports CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli.
Drew Peterson is now accused of hiring a hit man to kill the Will County state's attorney.
He is perhaps the states most infamous inmate. The 61-year-old is serving a 38 year sentence at Menard Correctional Facility for murdering his third wife. Now, if he's convicted of trying to hire a hit man, he could have another 40 years tacked on to his sentence.
That would all but ensure that he'll die Menard or in some other Illinois prison.
The charges that state Drew Peterson tried to kill Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow emerged last month. Glasgow is the same man who led the trial that sent Peterson to prison for killing his third wife Kathleen Savio.
Court documents indicate Peterson hatched the plot from behind bars at Menard Correctional Center sometime between Sept of 2013, and last December.
CBS 2 Legal Analyst Irv Miller explained how it could happen.
"Let's say he knows this guy is getting out next week and he says 'Hey listen, you kill Glasgow when you get out and I'll give you $10,000' or whatever it is," Miller said.
As for Peterson's defense, we're not sure, but there have been suggestions that other inmates tried to entrap the former Bolingbrook cop.
Peterson says he's innocent and is appealing his current murder conviction.
