Don't Let Colds Become Something More Serious, Physician Says

(CBS) -- Chicago-area doctors are treating more common colds this year that have more severe respiratory symptoms.

CBS 2's Sandra Torres reports on why it should be treated now before it gets worse.

From natural remedies to over-the-counter meds, Nicole Simonds and her family have relied on everything to recover from a contagious virus.

She's now battling her second round, with a stubborn cough.

Dr. Jennifer Goldfarb from Rush University Medical Center says in the last few weeks she's seen about five patients a day with these lingering symptoms.

Antibiotics and inhalers are helpful in some cases, but Goldfarb says the best advice is to see your doctor because the viruses can turn into ear and sinus infections and even pneumonia.

It's advice that Nicole is taking seriously.

"Very much looking forward to us of all feeling better," she says.
