Person shot and killed at cookout in forest preserve in south Chicago suburb

CHICAGO (CBS) — A person was shot and killed near the Cook County Forest Preserve in south suburban Dixmoor Sunday night. 

Dixmoor officers heard gunshots near 141st Street and Wood Street on a routine patrol just before 10 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, they wat nearly 500 people fleeing from a park in the forest preserve.

Police found nearly 40 people standing over the victim, who was shot while attending a cookout party at Dixmoor Playfield. He died at a local hospital.

The victim was identified as Roshon S. Holmes, 30, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

The parking lot at 141st and Wood Streets remained blocked off for a police investigation involving multiple agencies.

The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department and Forest Preserves of Cook County Police Department were investigating the shooting.

Police have not confirmed if any arrests have been made or what led to the shooting.
