'Suspicious package' causes hazmat situation at Des Plaines Police Department

Suspicious package evacuates Des Plaines police headquarters

DES PLAINES, Ill. (CBS) -- A suspicious package late Friday brought fire trucks, police tape, and crews bedecked in hazmat suits to Des Plaines.

The large emergency response came after the city's police headquarters was evacuated, and two police staffers were sent to hospitals.

As CBS 2's Marybel González reported, the scene was cleared late Friday night. But for hours, we saw first responders from various agencies going in and out of the police department – some of them covered head-to-toe in hazmat suits.

We saw some agents getting sprayed down after exiting the building, at 1418 Miner St., and then later, the agents huddled and surrounded by fire trucks and police cars.

Police operations were temporarily transitioned to City Hall.

It was still unclear Friday night what was discovered in that suspicious package, but we do know that two members of the police department staff were in close contact with that item – and were taken to the hospital in good condition as a precautionary measure.

We asked the city if they had been released, but were told that information was not available at this time. They also would not say how those staff members came into contact with the package.

Residents earlier were asked to avoid the area. But by the 9 p.m. hour, the scene was clear and all the yellow tape had been removed.

We have also learned that the FBI has taken over the investigation. We reached out to the FBI, which said they have no updates at this time.
