Demolition Begins On Vacant Gary Hotel
(CBS) -- Demolition work has begun on an eyesore in Gary, reports WBBM's Mike Krauser.
The old 14-story hotel next to Gary's City Hall has become a very visible symbol of the blight in the city. The see-through structure, visible from the toll road with small trees growing on the roof, is coming down.
Recently, Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson mentioned the time she was on the top of another building and a reporter asked what he saw.
" He said, 'Well, you look out, you have to see the blight, you have to see the vacant hotel, you have to see all of these negative things' and then I recounted to him that I saw a great city. I saw all of the things that make our city great," Freeman-Wilson said.
But, as one of Gary's biggest cheerleaders, she will be glad so to see the old hotel come down.
