Welfare check leads to discovery of 2 decomposed bodies on Chicago's Northwest Side

2 decomposing bodies, including child, found in Logan Square apartment

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Chicago police discovered two decomposed bodies, including a 6-year-old boy, during a welfare check at a home in Logan Square late Tuesday night.

Investigators found the remains of 40-year-old Josean Cano and 6-year-old Samuel Cano inside an apartment on the 3500 block of West Lyndale Street just after 10:15 p.m.

Both were found dead in the bedroom.

It is not clear just how the two died, or how long the bodies were in that bedroom, but according to investigators, they were in an advanced stage of decomposition.

A neighbor said he hadn't seen Josean in about four weeks. That neighbor said he called police to conduct a well-being check, after Josean's relatives called him, because they were concerned they hadn't heard from him in a while. He also said Samuel had special needs.

A second neighbor, Matthew Curtis, said he and his girlfriend saw police outside the apartment when they got home Tuesday night, but didn't learn what happened until Wednesday morning.

"My stomach turned hearing about it. I just felt sick. It's just, you don't know what happened, and it's just sad. I mean, a kid. It's way too young, regardless of any of the circumstances," Curtis said.

Police are investigating and are calling this a death investigation.
