2 killed, 2 others hurt in crash near Cook County Jail in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two people were killed, and two others were hospitalized after a crash near the Leighton Criminal Courthouse and Cook County Jail Sunday morning.

Chicago police said two cars collided just after 5 a.m. in the 2600 block of South California Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood.

One neighbor, Andre Stewart, said he tried to help rescue an off-duty police officer who was in one of the cars involved in the crash. Stewart said he heard a "big ole boom sound."

"I see a van turned upside down with a lady police officer in it," he said. "And I see a blue car over here with a man there on the ground with his head busted wide open and another man on the other side of the car."

All four people were taken to hospitals. Two of the victims, who were passengers in the involved cars, were pronounced dead.

One of the passengers was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital Sunday morning, where they died. Police later confirmed Sunday afternoon that the second passenger died at Stroger Hospital.

The ages of the victims were not released.

Two other people were taken to Stroger — a 37-year-old woman, who was a driver in one of the cars, was listed in serious condition. The fourth person described as a male, was in critical condition.

A video shared on the Citizen App showed the scene after the crash with one car flipped on its side. Neighbors said the impact of the crash was so severe that it pushed a dumpster several feet and knocked over a bollard.

The Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
