4 Injured, 2 Critically, In Dan Ryan Crash; ISP Squad Car Struck In Nearby Crash

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A violent crash on the southbound Dan Ryan near 39th Street left four people hospitalized Saturday morning.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, two men were left in critical condition, and two others were also hospitalized.

Near there just a short while later around 5:15 a.m. someone rear-ended an Illinois state trooper's squad car.

According to Illinois State Police, two squad cars and an Illinois Department of Transportation vehicle were blocking the China Town Feeder ramp with their lights activated on the scene of another crash when a blue Honda going southbound on the ramp struck both squad cars and the IDOT truck.

All occupants were outside of the vehicles at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The driver of the Honda continued driving from the scene, but after troopers gave a description, the Honda was stopped a short time later by another ISP trooper.

The driver of the Honda, Nichola Herard, 24, of Chicago, was charged with Scott's Law, driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and improper driving on the shoulder, according to ISP.

ISP District Chicago reported 14 crashes from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday, but none were fatal.

So far this year, there have been 15 ISP squad cars struck in relation to Scott's Law and eight troopers have been injured from related crashes, ISP said in a release.
