Crash Halts Dan Ryan Traffic For Hours

(CBS) --A multi-vehicle accident shut down the outbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway Tuesday afternoon.

It all started with a chain reaction crash involving a truck hauling paper which plowed into a school bus carrying special needs adults.

When it was all over, there was paper everywhere, there was a back-up for miles and one big mess to clean up.

The accident happened at about 3:10 p.m. near 95th Street and the southbound lanes were closed until 6:20 p.m.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, 37 special-needs adults were on the bus and all are being transferred to hospitals as a precaution and none of the injuries are considered major. The truck driver refused treatment.

The bus was headed from an adult daycare facility in Pilsen to a destination in Robbins.
Many drivers were stuck

"Man, it's kinda messed up man. You gotta re-route all this traffic," said Shawn Lee.

Crews used front-loaders, brooms and even rakes to clear all of the spilled paper from the roadway so that the lanes could be reopened.

A dump truck driver involved in the crash has been cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating unsafe equipment and spilling load on roadway.
