Cupich Helps Give Out Food To Needy For Thanksgiving
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Archbishop Blase Cupich rolled up his sleeves Wednesday to help hand out food for needy families in the Park Manor and Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods.
At St, Columbanus Church, 331 E. 71st ST., Cupich shook a lot of hands and gave a blessing to the volunteers who help run the pantry all year round.
"People are fed every week in their food pantry. They have a dedicated service. They make sure that food is not wasted, and so that people come here and are fed each and every week."
Many of those waiting are regular, like Barbara, who was there by 3 a.m., hoping to get a turkey.
"We won't arknow until we go on the other side," she said. "Whatever we're going to get, I'll be thankful for it, and take it home."
Others way at the back of the line were crossing fingers and toes that there would be enough for all.
"We just come out to see what we can get to have a feast," one woman said.
Cupich said St Columbanus gives out food every week of the year, "whether or not the cameras are rolling."
"We do it because there's a need out there, but also it's at the heart of who we are. Mission and message are one and the same for us," he said.
Those who rely on the pantry said they're thankful every week, not just during the holidays.
"We can't complain about the little small things that might come with it; thanking the Lord for that, and this glorious day, just waking up and we're blessed in our right frame of mind," one man said.
