Cubs To Honor Ernie Banks With No. 14 Patch On Jerseys
(CBS) The Cubs will honor Hall of Fame infielder and franchise icon Ernie Banks by wearing a commemorative patch of his No. 14 on their jerseys during the 2015 season.
Banks passed away in January at 83.
The Cubs will also wear No. 14 hats during both of their split-squad spring training games on March 5, with other acknowledgements planned for that day's opener at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., as well.
Prior to their April 5 regular-season opener at Wrigley Field, the Cubs will also hold a pregame ceremony to remember Banks. Fans attending that night will receive of commemorative pin to honor Banks.
"There is no level of recognition that can properly acknowledge how much Ernie Banks meant to this franchise and fan base," Cubs owner Tom Ricketts said. "Collectively, we must ensure Mr. Cub's legacy rightfully lives on at the Friendly Confines and with future generations of baseball fans."
Banks holds franchise records for games played (2,528), at-bats (9,421), extra-base hits (1,009) and total bases (4,706). He's also second in Cubs history in home runs (512) and RBIs (1,636).
