Cubs' Kyle Schwarber Explains Reason For Wearing A Green Wristband
(CBS) Cubs slugger Kyle Schwarber has been an inspiration to many of late with his relentless work ethic that led to a surprising, sooner-than-expected return from a serious knee injury and subsequent contributions in the World Series.
But even those who inspire need inspiration of their own, and Schwarber gets that in part from a young boy who's been brave in a fight against a genetic disease. Schwarber wears a bright green wristband on his left hand as a show of support for Campbell Faulkner, and after a 5-1 win in Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night, Schwarber explained more in detail how he met Faulkner in spring 2015 and has stayed in touch.
"Campbell Faulkner -- he's a kid that I met down in Arizona," Schwarber said. "He's got a rare genetic disease, and I met him in my first spring training. Really young, smart kid, and he's just always got a big smile on his face. You know, that draws your attention to him. He's living life to his fullest, even though he's got something to overcome.
We've grown a relationship over the last two years, and I actually got to see him when I was in Mesa playing in the AFL. It was great to see him. We stay in contact through email. He's a smart kid, man. The kid's got an IQ of like a college kid, for being so young. That tells you how smart he is. That's a person you want to look up to right there."
