Cubs Designate Barney For Assignment
(CBS) Darwin Barney's time in Chicago is over.
The Cubs have designated the light-hitting second baseman for assignment, they announced Tuesday afternoon. That means they'll have 10 days to trade, release or waive him. The 28-year-old Barney is batting .230 this season with two homers, 16 RBIs and a .593 OPS. He was a Gold Glove winner in 2012, but he's declined offensively since hitting .276 in 2011.
Barney's a career .244 hitter. His exit figures to continue to create playing time for rookie infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara, who is hitting .286 with an .859 OPS in eight games since getting called up from Triple-A Iowa.
In other moves, the Cubs called up right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who will start tonight against the Padres; activated utilityman Emilio Bonifacio from the 15-day disabled list; and optioned left-handed Zac Rosscup to Triple-A Iowa.
