Cubs, Barney Avoid Arbitration With 1-Year Deal

(CBS) The Chicago Cubs and second baseman Darwin Barney agreed to a one-year, $2.3-million contract Thursday, avoiding arbitration, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Barney struggled offensively in 2013, batting .208 with a .266 on-base percentage, seven homers and 41 RBIs.

Barney had filed for $2.8 million heading into arbitration, while the Cubs filed for $2.1 million, the Tribune reported.

Right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija is the Cubs' only remaining arbitration-eligible player who hasn't settled. His hearing is set for Feb. 10.
