Cubs Acquire Chris Coghlan From A's In Exchange For Arismendy Alcantara

(CBS) Chris Coghlan is on his way back to Chicago.

Traded in the offseason by the Cubs, Coghlan has been reacquired, with Chicago sending infielder prospect Arismendy Alcantara to the Oakland Athletics to nab him back.

The 30-year-old Coghlan -- who primarily is playing outfield now but also has experience in the infield -- is hitting .146 with a .487 OPS this season in 51 games. He batted .250 with 16 homers, 41 RBIs and a .784 OPS in 148 games for the Cubs in 2015. In late February, the Cubs traded Coghlan to the Athletics for right-hander Aaron Brooks.

The Cubs recently saw outfielder Jorge Soler go down with a hamstring strain. He'll be out at least two weeks and almost certainly more.

The 24-year-old Alcantara was hitting .264 with five homers, 21 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 53 games at Triple-A Iowa this season. He hit .194 across 81 games for the Cubs in 2014 and 2015. His path to regular playing time at the big league level was blocked in a crowded and young Cubs infield.
