CTA Train Derails At Bryn Mawr; Red, Purple Line Service Halted For Hours From Belmont To Howard
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Transit Authority Red and Purple Line service was halted north of Belmont for hours Monday evening after a train derailed at the Bryn Mawr stop in Edgewater.
Service on the Red Line was running only from Belmont on south for several hours Monday night until it finally resumed at 9:45 p.m.
Purple Line Express, which ends for the night after the evening rush, was also suspended from Belmont to Howard. Purple Line local service in Evanston and Wilmette continued.
The Fire Department reported one wheel came off a train onto the tracks on a Purple Line train.
A total of 24 people were on the train at the time.
As a precaution, the Fire Department called a still-and-box alarm - a response usually intended for a fire - and an EMS Plan 1, sending five ambulances to the scene. But there did not end up being any injuries.
Everyone was assisted off the southbound train, the CTA said.
Power was shut down in both directions, prompting the service suspension.
