CTA Brown Line partially shut down after woman is hit, killed by train
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The CTA Brown Line was shut down south and east of the Southport stop Wednesday evening, as crews worked rescue a woman who was hit by a train at the Sedgwick stop in Old Town and was pronounced dead soon afterward.
Police said at 5:18 p.m., the woman – whose name and age were not specified – fell onto the tracks and was hit by an oncoming train.
The woman ended up under the tracks under the lead car of a Brown Line train. Firefighters rushed quickly to the scene and used a Stokes basket stretcher to remove the person around 5:30 p.m.
The firefighters lifted the woman off the tracks, and over their heads and the train car, back onto the platform. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Police said the woman's death appeared to be a suicide.
Brown and Purple Line trains were halted while fire crews retrieved the woman's body. Following the recovery and amid an investigation, Brown Line trains were completely shut down between Southport and the Loop – with trains only running between Kimball and Southport.
Shuttle buses were put into use between the Southport and Clark/Lake stops.
