Woman dies after school bus collides with SUV in Crown Point, Indiana

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman has died after a head-on collision with a school bus Thursday morning in Crown Point, Indiana.

Around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, a school bus was headed west on the 3300 block of 133rd Avenue in unincorporated Crown Point, when it swerved off the road and hit a mailbox, according to the Lake County Sheriff's office. The driver then overcorrected to the left, into oncoming traffic, where the bus collided with a Ford Edge SUV.

The driver of the SUV, 53-year-old Lisa Smith, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on Thursday afternoon. according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The bus driver and a bus monitor were the only people on board the school bus at the time, according to the sheriff's office. The bus driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and the monitor was not injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
