Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in crash on I-57 on Chicago's Far South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A driver suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash that shut down Interstate 57 on the city's Far South Side Monday afternoon.

The crash happened on northbound I-57 at 123rd Street.

Illinois State Police said three vehicles were involved in the crash at 2:46 p.m. One vehicle rolled several times down an embankment and hit a pole, state police said.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, state police said.

A red vehicle was seen wrecked and lying on its side along the shoulder at t he scene.

Following the crash northbound I-57 was closed at the scene – and all traffic was being forced off at 127th Street. State police were conducting an accident reconstruction.

The roadway was back open by just after 8 p.m.
