Craigslist Ad Sells 'Dibs' Chairs Collected From Chicago Parking Spots

CHICAGO (CBS) -- On the market for some cheap lawn chairs?

One Chicagoan has done exactly what many have been dying to do.

K-HITS Chicago reports that someone has been going from neighborhood to neighborhood and taking "dibs" chairs — chairs saving parking spots for people — from saved spots.

This individual took their thievery one step further, posting a Craigslist ad (UPDATE: Craigslist has deleted the post) in an attempt to sell the many, many chairs they've collected (they claim to have collected about 350 chairs).

"In driving around the Northside these past few days I'm seeing hundreds of chairs being abandoned on the streets. I've collected about 350 various chairs… I'm selling each chair for $5, regardless of condition or smell."

Calling dibs on parking spots with lawn chairs and other items is a tradition unique to Chicago that goes back decades.

Tradition or not, the practice has made many enemies, including 35th ward Alderman Rey Colón, who spoke out against the practice in a recent newsletter.

While the city won't ticket individuals for saving parking spots, Chicago Streets and Sanitation will throw away any items littering the streets during regular garbage pickups.

So if your favorite lawn chair happens to be next to the curb, you might want to move it before it gets tossed out with the rest of the trash.
