CPS Says It Had Record Attendance On First Day

(CBS) -- Chicago Public Schools announced that it has record attendance numbers on the first day of school on Tuesday.

CPS says it had 94.8 percent attendance system wide and Edison Park Elementary and Edgar Allan Poe Classical School each had perfect attendance.

"Students who are in class on the first day of school will learn more and perform better," said CPS CEO Forrest Claypool. "We're grateful to the parents, community partners and students who made an effort to get to school ready to learn on the first day."

CPS says it had 93.7 percent attendance on the first day last year.
