Cops Pump Gas To Raise Money For Children's Hospital
CHICAGO (CBS) -- People in southwest suburban Alsip were doing double takes Friday morning when they spotted police officers pumping gas for motorists at a BP gas station.
WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports Alsip Police Lt. Scott Zablotny was among the officers pumping gas as part of "Full Serve and Protect" at the BP Earth Market at 123rd and Cicero.
"A few months ago, we hooked up with Earth Market and did a community event, where the public was invited to come out, have coffee, talk to officers," he said. "Robin, the owner, suggested it would be a fun idea to do it as a full service gas station."
Any tips the officers get were going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Sarah, one of the motorists who pulled up for a fillup, said the fundraiser is a good idea. She's never had her car filled up by a police officer before. Zablotny even washed her windows.
"It's nice this morning," she said.
If he leaves any streaks on her windshields, "I'll let him get away with it," she added.
The officers were pumping gas at the BP Earth Market until noon Friday.
