Suspect arrested after Cook Co. Sheriff's officer shot on Chicago's Southwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Cook County Sheriff's officer is in critical condition after being shot Wednesday night on Chicago's Southwest Side.

One person is in custody related to the shooting.

Just before 9 p.m., police said the 37-year-old was shot twice after trying to intercede as two people inside cars started shooting at each other.

Police said a driver in one of the cars hit another car, lost control, and crashed into a McDonald's near 47th Street and Cicero Avenue.

The officer is in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital after he was shot in the elbow and lower back.

Police arrested one of the drivers, who remains in the hospital in good condition.

Waleed Ateyah works at the Daze and Nights Smoke Shop near where the shooting took place. He took video on his phone of the immediate aftermath.

"Was just working regular night and heard four or five gunshots," Ateyah said. "I assumed it was coming from the back alley, so I was kinda caught off guard."

Ateyah said Cicero Avenue looked like a Christmas tree lit up by lights and sirens.

Aurora Villenado, a nearby resident, said she ran outside when she heard the sirens.

"It was very scary," she said.

Villenado added she saw police arrest one person who tried to run away near an alley.

It's unclear if any charges have been filed related to the shooting. Police have not said if they're looking for a second offender connected to the initial shooting.
