Cook County Jail Inmate Punches Guard Several Times
(CBS) -- Days after two inmates took another detainee hostage, there was another disturbance at the Cook County Jail.
An inmate on Friday night punched an officer several times as the staff member attempted to return the detainee to his cell.
Other officers intervened, and the guard who was struck did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to Cara Smith, chief policy officer for the Cook County Sheriff's Department, which runs the lockup near 26th and California.
Smith said her office is pushing for the inmate to be charged in the attack. It wasn't known when the injured guard will return to work.
The assault occurred in Division 9, which is maximum security. It is not the same division where two inmates took control of a housing tier earlier this week and held one hostage before police rushed them and restored order.
