Cook County To Expand Court Capacity For Criminal Trials As Illinois Reopens

CHICAGO (CBS) -- As Illinois reopens, a backlog of felony court cases is looming.
Thus, Cook County is expanding its capacity to hold trials, with 86 courtrooms available starting Friday, July 23.
Chief Judge Timothy Evans said there are 159 cases ready for trial – and with the expanded capacity, they can be accommodated by the end of September.
Until recently, only one jury trial a week was held at the county's Leighton Criminal Court Building.
