Cook Co. Sheriff Tom Dart: Parent Coaching Programs Can Curb Abuse
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cases of child abuse and neglect are on the rise.
Now, Illinois law enforcement leaders are pushing 'parent-coaching' programs. They said number show those programs can stop abuse before it starts.
Dart wants more state and federal funding for national programs like Healthy Families America. Mothers in the program had a 36% decrease in referrals for maltreatment of children.
Illinois had more than 31,000 children with substantiated cases of maltreatment in 2018, and increase of 10% over the previous year.
