Congressman Schock Proposes To End CHA "Supervouchers"
(CBS) -- Some Chicago Housing Authority Residents are getting government money to live in luxury buildings that most Chicagoans probably can't afford, reports WBBM's Terry Keshner.
Illinois Republican Aaron Schock says CHA "supervouchers" are a "select few families receiving lottery wins, if you will, of $3,000 to $4,000 a month in rent assistance for some of the nicest luxury units in downtown Chicago."
The CHA can give vouchers of up to 300 percent of market value. Congressman Schock is proposing to bring that down to 120 percent.
"For us to continue to receive congressional support for funding for vouchers like this, we have to make sure they are not being abused," Schock said.
The CHA statement to Newsradio says exception payments are less than two percent of its overall voucher portfolio.
