Comptroller: State Budget Standoff Impacting Domestic Violence Programs
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Illinois State Comptroller urged Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders in the General Assembly to resolve their difference over the still-stalled state budget, as she tried to call attention to domestic violence programs that have been suffering without state funding.
Munger toured the Community Crisis Center in Elgin to hear how the domestic violence program and others like it have been struggling with staffing and program cuts because of the budget impasse. She told officials she's at a loss for how to get the governor and lawmakers together.
"On behalf of the state, I apologize for the situation we've put you in," she said.
Community Crisis Center director Gretchen Vapnar said she has good feelings about Munger, but not so much about state government.
"I am, you might tell, not only frustrated but a little angry; and what seems to me to be happening is a conflict, a giant conflict," she said.
Vapnar said groups like hers are good at conflict resolution, and she offered to help.
