Calls for more police after violent holiday weekend in Lakeview

CBS News Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some Lakeview residents are calling for a more robust police presence after a violent Memorial Day weekend.

They held a news conference Tuesday at the site of a shooting that transpired early Sunday morning. Three people were wounded while standing on the sidewalk around 1 a.m. near Broadway and Barry Avenue.

Residents want more officers to patrol the area over the summer to keep the community safe.

In the incident at Broadway and Barry Avenue three men were walking on the sidewalk when someone fired shots.

A man was transported in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the back and chest. A 32-year-old man was shot in the back and was in good condition. And a 22-year-old man was good condition after being shot in the right leg.

Early Saturday morning, a man was shot and killed on Surf Street east of Broadway – about two full city blocks south.

Police said 35-year-old William Hair was walking home with a friend when they were ambushed by two people who came out of a car near Pine Grove Avenue and Surf Street.

One of those people opened fire, striking William in the chest.

"It was senseless. It was. There was nothing they were trying to achieve except for taking an innocent person's life," said William's brother Matthew.

A shooting that wounded one man was also reported early this past Thursday morning on Melrose Street off Broadway.
