Community Honors Mom's Fight Against Breast Cancer
(CBS) -- What started as a cause with modest goals on Monday became an explosion of pink under Friday night lights for a high school mom in Crystal Lake.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards was there.
No one has known more change than Jill Weldon. That's not because of what happened last spring, when she went for her annual mammogram.
"The doctor came in and said, 'We can almost guarantee you have breast cancer," Weldon tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards.
It was Stage 3. Three months later, in July, her husband was killed in a car accident while the two were on vacation.
"He was everything to me," Weldon says.
One student's fund-raiser brainchild to honor her friend's mom was a huge success Friday night.
Organizers thought they'd sell 200 pinks shirts this week. They sold out, re-ordered 500 and counting. The thousands raised will go to a local cancer charity.
Weldon says her heart may be broken, but adds: "This community has been incredible."
