Cold And Windy Wednesday, But Much Milder Weather Ahead

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Wednesday will be a cool and blustery day across the Chicago area, but a significant warmup is on tap in time for the Mother's Day weekend.

Highs were expected to linger in the upper 40s along the lakefront, and in the mid to upper 50s west of the lake. Winds of up to 30 mph and scattered showers will keep things on the dreary side throughout the day.

Much better weather is in our future though, as Thursday will be dry and mostly sunny, with highs in the mid to upper 50s near the lake, and the low to mid 60s inland.

Temperatures will soar on Friday, reaching a high in the upper 70s, and it will be only slightly cooler near the lake.

More scattered showers are possible on Saturday, with temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Mother's Day should be ideal for a cookout, with a high around 65, and clear skies.

Next week likely will start out wet, with a chance of rain each day through Thursday, but at least temperatures should stay mild, with highs in the mid to upper 60s through most of next week
