Claypool Says CPS Ready To Make Budget Cuts If Springfield Increases Funding

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool says his administration is ready to make more budget cuts if Springfield ups the ante on funding for the city's school system, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

At a City Club of Chicago luncheon, CPS CEO Forrest Claypool continued to make the case that Chicago's public school kids were at a disadvantage compared with other children across the state.

"CPS students received 26 percent less in state education funding per pupil on average than children in the rest of the state," Claypool said.

And he made a vow.

"We will make dramatic efficiencies and cuts and savings that will be a significant part of the puzzle of solving this problem," Claypool said.

How dramatic? He wouldn't exactly say when reporters asked him afterwards.

"Well, those are going to take the entire year to unfold," Claypool said. "I've already cut more than $10 million out of the bureaucracy."

He says he is willing to cut something comparable with what he is asking from the state.
