City Of Harvey Honors Officer Wounded In Standoff
(CBS) -- It started as a burglary and ended in a 21-hour police standoff.
Harvey police officer Darnell Keel was one of two officers shot. He's now out of the hospital.
CBS 2's Brad Edwards reports.
Darnell was greeted with applause and hug after hug at Monday's City Council meeting, where he was recognized for his bravery.
He was injured at the start of a 21-hour standoff, as two parolees took a Harvey family hostage.
Keel was the first to arrive.
"As I was about to leave, the door flung open, the subject jumped off the porch. I turned and looked into the residence. I see nothing but gunfire," he said.
The officer pushed a rookie cop out of the way. He himself was hit twice; on the ground, he returned fire.
"I'm glad it turned out like this, and I'll do it again if I had to," Keel told Edwards.
Officer Keel will be off the street for a time. He has a plate in his arm, and although the potential recovery time is a month, he says he'll be back sooner.
