High Waves Swamp Parts Of Lake Shore Drive, Navy Pier

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Huge waves on Lake Michigan have flooded sections of Lake Shore Drive on Friday afternoon.

Strong winds have been creating huge waves on Lake Michigan on Friday, with the National Weather Service predicting waves as high as 23 feet.

The waves were flooding several sections of northbound Lakeshore Drive with several inches of water, especially between Division Street and North Avenue.

Meanwhile, Navy Pier – Chicago's top tourist attraction, closed its east end, for safety reasons, CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports.

Also, a barge that was slated to open Nov. 2 was damaged and took on some water.

Pier officials also announced the cancellation of several Friday evening events, including a haunted house and masquerade ball. Boat cruises aboard the Mystic Blue and Spirit of Chicago also were canceled for Friday night.
