Chris Collins Signs Multi-Year Extension With Northwestern

(CBS) Northwestern men's basketball coach Chris Collins has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the school announced on Tuesday.

Neither the school nor Collins specified how many years the extension is for, though Collins told the Tribune that he'll be in Evanston for the "foreseeable future." The money also wasn't divulged. The Tribune first reported the news.

Collins, 41, expressed his desire to stay with Northwestern for the long-term future, citing the hopes of building a sustained winner for the Wildcats while raising his young family where he grew up.

"Nothing has changed from what I said when I got the job," Collins said. "My family and I made this move with the idea that we're going to be here for the long term. This isn't a stepping stone for something else. It's a great school with great people and a chance to build a basketball program that's going to be respected nationally.

"I love being in Chicago, I love Northwestern, I love the kind of guys that we're recruiting. I'm excited about the future here. None of that has changed since the moment I stepped on campus. I came here with the idea of staying a long time, and I want that to be the case."

In his two years at Northwestern, Collins is 29-36, including a 15-17 mark last season. Athletic director Jim Phillips has often stressed he understands it takes time to rebuild the program as the Wildcats pursue their goal of reaching their first ever NCAA Tournament.
