Chilly Weekend Weather Prompts Freeze Watch

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Get ready to put a couple extra blankets on the bed, and make sure your furnace or radiators are working properly, as temperatures could plunge below freezing at night this weekend.

Thursday's temperatures should be comfortable, reaching a high in the mid 60s, but much chillier conditions are on the way Friday through Sunday.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze watch for the entire Chicago area from late Friday night through Saturday morning, as temperatures could dip below 32 during that time.

The entire weekend will be rather chilly, as temperatures won't get out of the low 50s Friday and Saturday, and will reach only the mid 50s on Sunday. The nights will be even colder, with temperatures dropping into the mid to low 30s Friday and Saturday night, with some areas possibly seeing the high 20s.

The normal high this time of year is about 62 degrees, and the low is typically around 42.

The freeze watch means sensitive outdoor plants might be damaged or killed if not protected from the cold. You can cover outdoor plants with a blanket or cloth tarp to insulate them from the cold, and cover that with a plastic sheet if you're worried about rain.

Luckily, this weekend should be mostly dry. The only risk of rain is some possible sprinkles Thursday night, when frost won't be a factor, as the low will be about 40.

Temperatures should get back to normal starting Monday, when the high will be about 64, and stay seasonably cool through the middle of next week.
