Children's Hospital At UIC Holds Thanksgiving Party For Pediatric Cancer Patients, Families
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Pediatric cancer patients and their families celebrated Thanksgiving today by having some food - and a lot of fun - with their doctors and caregivers at the Children's Hospital at UIC.
The event was at the school's student center, just blocks from the hospital where so many of them have spent a lot of time dealing with very serious issues.
Dr. Mary Lou Schmidt, head of pediatric hematology and oncology, says this is the tenth year they've hosted the party that allows parents, patients and staffers to pause a moment and enjoy the kids feeling well.
Rob Roach came in from Cincinnati with his wife and their four-year-old son Evan, who despite losing an eye to cancer, scampered around the room.
Non-profits that work with the hospital set up tables to decorate turkeys, snowflakes and mittens.
There was a photo booth and a pop-a-shot basketball game, along with a Thanksgiving lunch and professional photographers.
Christina from Cedar Lake, Indiana says her eight-year-old son Brody was excited to come in - and not have to see the doctor about his leukemia.
