Chicago's Trump Supporters Answer: Why?
(CBS) – What draws people to presidential candidate Donald Trump?
CBS 2's Mike Parker spoke with some of the Republican frontrunner's local supporters.
The various surveys suggest more than half of Trump supporters are women, about one-third over 65 and that only half have high school diplomas. Only 11 percent make six figures or more.
Those are just numbers. So, why are Chicago area Trump supporters joining this movement?
"I think he could use some polishing when he speaks, but he speaks the truth," says retired paralegal Pat Borer.
She and her husband, Ron, a retired financial advisor, are from the western suburbs.
"My philosophy this time around voting is, I'm voting the ABC's – 'anybody but Clinton' -- and Trump would fill that bill," Ron Borer says.
"I mean, he's a businessman. I'm tired of politicians taking over the White House," Pat Borer says.
Trump as outsider and businessman. That seems to be drawing people into his tent. As for his sometimes insulting speech, his fans either apologize for it -- or they love it.
"He doesn't care what people think about him, and that's what I like about him. I like how he speaks, I like what he says," Frank Infelice says.
Tracy Garcia Oestmann is a U.S. Air Force veteran and Northwest Side mother of four, a Mexican American who's switched from Ben Carson to Trump.
"I just find that we're in a position right now, as a mother, that we're not doing so well. Maybe it's time to put aside the good old boys, the good old politicians and maybe bring in a businessman," she says.
How does Tracy square her Latino heritage with Trump's immigration tirades?
She says she is convinced that once he's elected, he'll moderate his policy and make it easy for more immigrants to come to the U.S. legally.
