Chicago's Crumbling Sidewalks Exposed By DePaul Students

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicagoans hear a lot about potholes and how the city is filling thousands of them to make the streets safer for motorists.

What about the sidewalks? Many of them are in bad shape, too.

That's where DePaul journalism students enter the picture.

They have a website, called The Chicago Stumbler, that documents poor sidewalks near Chicago Red Line L stops.

The site features dozens of photos of decaying sidewalks and a map that documents the locations.

The project was inspired by The Stumblr, a sidewalks blog by Voice of San Diego.

The Chicago Department of Transportation is responsible for repairing hundreds of miles of the city's sidewalks.

If you see a sidewalk that is need of attention, tweet it to @redlineproject and call the city at 311.
