Chicago Wendy's worker injured after shots fired into drive-thru window
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Wendy's worker was shot through a drive-thru window in Chicago's West Chatham neighborhood early Thursday morning.
Police said just before 1 a.m., the 20-year-old woman was working at the window in the 8700 block of South Lafayette Avenue when a man began arguing with her and fired shots. The window shattered, and she was hit in the right arm.
The worker was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital, where she was expected to recover from her physical injuries.
The victim's mother told CBS 2 that the worker was in the drive-thru when someone came through and said they were there for a DoorDash order. Her daughter told the person they didn't have such an order. The driver told her to remake it, but she couldn't fill the request because there was no order in the system.
That's when the driver became argumentative. Her daughter called over a manager, and the driver started shooting.
Wendy's said in a statement, "Our number one priority is the safety of our employees. We are deeply disturbed by this senseless act of violence and we are grateful that our team member will recover. We will do whatever we can to work with local law enforcement as they conduct their investigation."
The victim's mother said her daughter has only worked at Wendy's for a few months. The company would not confirm if they had video of the shooting but there appeared to be at least two cameras pointed at the drive-thru.
DoorDash did not immediately respond to a question of if it had any orders from the restaurant or if there was a system glitch.
Police are searching for the shooter.
