2 dead, 28 hurt in Chicago weekend shootings, police say

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least two people were killed and 28 others were wounded as of Sunday in weekend shootings across Chicago, according to police. 

The ages of the victims range from 2 to 58.

Shootings from Friday

In the first shooting of the weekend, two teen boys, 14 and 16, were shot while standing on the sidewalk just after 5 p.m. Friday in the 5000 block of West Wrightwood Avenue.

Police say they were approached by an unknown vehicle, and a male from inside shot at the teens.

The 14-year-old was hit in the hand and taken to West Suburban Hospital. The 16-year-old was grazed in the arm and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Both were in good condition. 

Later in the evening, around 7:15 p.m., In the 7400 block of South Racine Avenue, a 38-year-old man was on the street when he was struck in his left leg by gunfire from an unknown person. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Minutes later, a 28-year-old man was shot in his left arm while on the sidewalk in the 7700 block of South Loomis Boulevard around 7:30 p.m. That victim was transported to Christ Hospital in good condition. 

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 8:50 p.m. in the 5300 block of North Lincoln Avenue, a 41-year-old man was in a parking lot and involved in an argument with an unknown person who pulled a firearm and shot at the victim, striking him in the stomach. The victim was taken to St. Francis Hospital in fair condition. 
  • At 11:22 p.m. in the 6900 block of South California Avenue, a 20-year-old man was in an alley when an unknown vehicle pulled up alongside. Someone from inside the vehicle shot at the victim, striking him in the left hand. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.

Shootings from Saturday

  • At 2:47 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Fulton Boulevard, a 31-year-old man was arguing with an unknown person while inside an apartment. That person then pulled out a firearm and shot at the victim, striking him in the neck. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. 
  • At 9:32 a.m. in the 9500 block of South Avenue N., an unidentified woman victim was found outside with gunshot wounds to the body, where she died. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by Area detectives.
  • At 4:59 p.m. a 32-year-old woman and a man got into a quarrel on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South Millard Avenue in North Lawndale. The quarrel turned physical, and the man shot the woman. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition with a graze wound to the torso.
  • At 5:26 p.m., three men were shot on the sidewalk in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. A vehicle pulled up and at least one person fired shots at them all, police said. A 34-year-old man was shot in the elbow, a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg, and a 37-year-old man was also shot in the leg. All were hospitalized in good condition.
  • At 6:57 p.m., a 58-year-old man was traveling in a vehicle in the 6900 block of South Prairie Avenue in Park Manor when he was shot on the chest. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
  • At 7 p.m., a 2-year-old girl was shot and wounded in the 2500 block of West 61st Street in Chicago Lawn. Police said she suffered a gunshot to the right leg, and was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. A gun was recovered at the scene.
  • At 11:58 p.m. in the 900 block of North Long Avenue, a man, 44, was standing on the street when a white vehicle approached, and someone unknown fired shots and fled the scene. The victim was hit in the left armpit, rear, and lower back and was taken to Stroger in fair condition. No one is in custody.

Shootings from Sunday

  • At 1:43 a.m. in the 3700 block of West Douglass Boulevard, a 21-year-old man was standing in the alley when an unknown vehicle pulled up, and someone from inside fired gunshots, striking the victim in the right leg before fleeing the scene. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. 
  • At 1:52 a.m. in the 2300 block of South California Avenue, a man, 19, and a woman, 20, were in the street when they heard gunshots and realized they had been shot. The woman was shot in her right shoulder. She was taken to St. Anthony Hospital in good condition. The man suffered multiple graze wounds to his body and was also taken to St. Anthony in good condition. The victims were uncooperative and did not provide any further details.
  • At 2 a.m., police said the man's car was hit by a red car in the 1500 block of N. Magnolia Avenue. Police said the man got out of his car, and the driver of the red vehicle fired shots and drove off. The victim was shot in the chest and died at a local hospital.
  • At 4:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Ohio Street, a 25-year-old man was outside when he heard shots and then felt pain. The victim was struck in his back and was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition. Later, it was revealed that a 26-year-old man self-transported to Stroger with a gunshot wound to his right leg, where his condition was stabilized. He was being uncooperative with responding officers.
  • At 5:07 a.m. in the 5600 block of West Potomac Avenue, a 25-year-old man was inside a residence when he was shot in his body by an unknown person who was shooting in the area. The victim was taken to Stroger in critical condition.
  • At 8:33 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Union Avenue, a 39-year-old man was outside when he heard shots and then felt pain. The victim was hit in his back and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in critical condition.  
  • At 3:18 p.m. in the 900 block of North Kedvale Avenue, a 20-year-old man was near the sidewalk when he was approached by at least one armed person who pulled out a handgun and fired shots. The victim was struck in the arm and leg and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 7:28 p.m. in the 6100 block of South King Drive, a 30-year-old man was in the rear of a residence when he was approached by an unknown person who pulled out a handgun and fired shots. The victim was struck in the leg and abdomen and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.  
  • At 7:45 p.m. in the 100 block of West Cermak Road, a 27-year-old woman was near the sidewalk when she was struck in the arm by gunfire. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.
  • At 8 p.m. in the 3000 block of West Van Buren Street, a 48-year-old man was walking in the park when two armed males approached the victim and demanded property. The offenders did not take any property and fired gunshots, striking the victim in the back. The offenders fled the scene on foot. The victim was treated by the CFD and taken to Mt. Sinai in fair condition.
  •  At 8:53 p.m. in the 4800 block of South Ada Street, a 23-year-old man walked into a fast-food restaurant in the 1400 block of West 47th Street with a gunshot wound to the back, and was taken by fire crews in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center. 
  • At 10:30 p.m., in the 7900 block of South Ellis, an armed man approached a 34-year-old man on the sidewalk and demanded his property. The gunman took cash from the victim, then shot him in the right hand. The victim walked into University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Shootings from Monday

  • At 1:42 a.m., in the 200 block of South Ashland Avenue, a 33-year-old man was in the front seat of a black SUV, when someone in a white SUV started shooting. Both vehicles later crashed into a building in the 1800 block of South Ashland Avenue. The 33-year-old man was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the torso.

Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in either of the incidents.
