Chicago Weekend Shootings: 86-year-old man among 3 killed, 29 hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least three people were killed, and 27 others were hurt in weekend shootings in Chicago as of Sunday. The ages of the victims range from 14 to 86.

In the first shooting from the weekend, A 49-year-old man was shot while outside Friday, in the 3600 block of West Fifth Avenue around 5:21 p.m.

Police said the victim was standing on the street when he observed a known offender who produced a silver handgun and fled in a silver truck. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left foot and self-transported to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition.

Later in the evening, a 57-year-old man was shot around 6:33 p.m. in the 800 block of East 55th Street in Hyde Park. 

Police say the victim was struck in the leg by gunfire and self-transported to Insight Hospital in good condition. 

Around 8:50 p.m. Friday, a male victim walked into the University of Chicago Medical Center, in the 5800 block of South Maryland Avenue, with a gunshot wound to the left thigh in good condition.

The victim was very uncooperative with officers about the shooting and refused to answer any questions, police said.

Two other men were shot just after 11:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of West Lexington Street.

Police say both victims heard shots and felt pain. A 37-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the rear and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The second unaged man was shot in the right leg and was taken to Stroger in good condition.

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 11:35 p.m. Friday, in the 2600 block of West 51st Street, a man, 35, was standing on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left ankle and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 12:02 a.m. Saturday, in the 300 block of West 118th Street, a woman, 48, was standing on the street when an unknown vehicle approached and a person fired shots from inside. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the inner right thigh and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition.
  • At 12:23 a.m. Saturday, in the 1300 block of West 71st Street, a 21-year-old man was exiting his home when he observed a dark sedan approaching and someone unknown fired shots from the vehicle. The victim returned gunfire and was then taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.
  • At 12:27 a.m. Saturday, in the 7200 block of South Wood Street, a man, 34, walked into Holy Cross Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the right shoulder in good condition. The victim was very uncooperative with officers about the incident and refused to answer any questions. 
  • At 3:26 Saturday, in the 900 block of South Pulaski Road, a woman, 28, was walking northbound on Pulaski when a black truck approached and someone unknown fired shots in her direction. The victim was struck in the chest and chin and was taken by CFD to Stroger Hospital in critical condition
  • At 9:58 a.m. Saturday, in the 8100 block of South Throop Street, the victim, an 86-year-old man, was found outside with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. The victim was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. Circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by Area Two detectives.
  • At 12:53 p.m. Saturday, in the 5800 block of South Peoria Street, a 40-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when an unknown vehicle approached him. An offender from the vehicle began shooting in the direction of the victim. The victim was taken to U of C in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left calf.
  • At 7:06 p.m. Saturday, in the 1900 block of East 67th Street, a 22-year-old man was at a bus stop when three unknown male offenders approached. One offender produced a firearm and fired shots at the victim, striking him in the lower body. The victim then boarded a bus traveling westbound on 67th Street before being taken to the U of C in critical condition.
  • At 8:31 p.m. Saturday, in the 7900 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, a 41-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a man approached on foot and fired shots. The victim was taken by the Chicago Fire Department to Jackson Park Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the right arm. 
  • At 11:41 p.m. Saturday, in the 12200 block of South Wallace Street, a 34-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a male approached on foot and fired shots. The victim was taken by the CFD to Christ Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left leg.
  • At 12:40 a.m. Sunday, in the 9000 block of South Emerald Avenue, a 40-year-old man was standing on the street when a male approached on foot and fired shots. The victim was transported by CFD to Christ Hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the chest and was later pronounced dead.
  • At 12:34 a.m. Sunday, in the 2300 block of South California Avenue, a 29-year-old man was driving his vehicle when shots were fired causing the victim to strike two parked cars. The victim was taken by the CFD to Mt. Sinai in fair condition with graze wounds to the head.  
  • At 11 p.m. Saturday, in the 8100 block of South Racine Avenue, a 31-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when shots were fired. The victim was dropped off at Holy Cross and was transferred to Mt. Sinai in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the lower body.
  • At 10:30 p.m. Saturday, in the 7500 block of South Stoney Island Avenue, a 31-year-old man walked into Jackson Park Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg in good condition. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.  
  • At 1 a.m. Sunday, in an unknown location, a 30-year-old man walked into Mt. Sinai with gunshot wounds to the left foot and right arm in fair condition. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. 
  • At 2:06 a.m. Sunday, in the 900 block of North Fairfield Avenue, a 32-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when an occupant in a vehicle fired shots. The victim was taken by CFD to Stroger Hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the abdomen.  
  • At 12:54 a.m. Sunday, in the 5900 block of South Princeton Avenue, a 24-year-old man was sitting in the doorway of a residence when shots were fired. The victim was transported by the CFD to U of C with a gunshot wound to the right leg in fair condition.
  • At 12:07 a.m. Sunday, in the 2700 block of West 68th Street, two men, 18 and 19, were dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital by friends. The victims were then transferred to Mt. Sinai in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest. 
  • At 5:15 a.m. Sunday, in the 4900 block of South Paulina, a 52-year-old man was seated in his parked vehicle when an unknown male offender approached on foot and fired shots in the victim's direction. The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the back and was transported to Mt. Sinai in fair condition.
  • At 10:35 a.m. Sunday, in the 5500 block of South Union Avenue, a 24-year-old man was seated in his parked vehicle when two unknown male offenders, occupying a gray-in-color vehicle, approached and fired shots in the victim's direction. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds throughout the body and was pronounced dead on the scene. 
  • At 3:10 p.m. Sunday, a 27-year-old man was in a parking lot in the 2900 block of East 83rd Street in South Chicago when two people came up – and at least one of them took out a handgun and shot him. The victim was struck once in the body and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
  • At 4:50 p.m. Sunday, a 49-year-old man was in a home in the 2200 block of North Central Avenue in Belmont Central when he was shot in the leg by someone he knew. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, while the suspected gunman was arrested with charges pending.
  • At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, a 14-year-old boy was walking on the sidewalk in the 800 block of East 87th Street in East Chatham, when someone in a black sedan fired shots. He was taken to the hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the hand.
  • At 12:09 a.m. Monday, a 30-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 5300 block of South Carpenter Street in Back of the Yards, when someone shot him in the left leg. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.
  • At 12:21 a.m. Monday, a 19-year-old man was shot in the left and right legs in the 4000 block of North Central Park Avenue in Irving Park. He was taken to the hospital in fair condition.
