3 dead, 15 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings, police say

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least three people were killed and 15 others were hurt in weekend shootings across Chicago as of Sunday, according to police. 

The ages of the victims range from 15 to 57. 

Shootings from Friday

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 52-year-old man was near the sidewalk in the 800 block of North Kedzie Avenue around 5:11 p.m. when he was struck in the leg by gunfire. He self-transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 

Hours later, around 7:10 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Arthur Avenue, a 15-year-old boy was near the sidewalk when he was approached by two unknown offenders on two motorized scooters. One of them produced a handgun and fired shots.

The teen was struck in the back and arm and was transported to St. Francis Hospital, initially reported in serious condition. 

Minutes later, around 7:30 p.m., in the 5600 block of South Racine Avenue, a 23-year-old man was near the sidewalk when he was struck in the lower body by gunfire. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.

Then, just before midnight, a 28-year-old woman was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 9900 block of South Wentworth Avenue when someone in a dark-colored sedan fired shots. The victim was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left hand.

Shootings from Saturday

  • At 12:38 a.m. in the 3500 block of North Belmont Harbor Drive, two men were standing in a parking area when someone in a dark-colored SUV fired shots. One man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died on the scene. The second man was taken by Chicago fire crews to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the left arm and chest.

  • Around 3 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Lexington Street, a 37-year-old man was shot while standing in an alley in the 3900 block of West Lexington Avenue. Police said a known male offender approached the victim and fired shots. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition with a gunshot wound to the back. 

  • Around 2:19 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Lowe Avenue, a 23-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were in a verbal altercation on the sidewalk. Police said the man displayed a gun and fired one gunshot in the air, then accidentally discharged another shot, which grazed him in the right leg. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition with a graze wound to the right leg. He was taken into custody. The woman was not injured.

  • Around 4:42 p.m. in the 9300 block of South Stoney Island Avenue, a 31-year-old man was near the sidewalk when he was approached by an unknown car. An occupant inside pulled out a gun and fired shots. The victim was hit in the shoulder and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

  • Around 5:56 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Knox Avenue, a 21-year-old man was near a parking lot when he was approached by an unknown car, and an unknown occupant exited and fired shots. The victim was hit in the torso area and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition.

  • At 11:10 p.m. in the 5000 block of South Halsted Street, a 57-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle when he was shot at by an unknown man who fled the scene in a vehicle. The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the shoulder and was taken to U of C in good condition. 

  • At 11:45 p.m., in the 6800 block of South Michigan Avenue, a 17-year-old boy was outside walking when he was shot at by an unknown person traveling in a black vehicle. The victim was hit in the ankle and taken to U of C in serious condition.     

Shootings from Sunday

  • At 2:07 a.m., in the 3700 block of West Cermak Road, officers responded to a person shot in the side of an apartment complex and found a 50-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition. A witness told officers that an unknown man and woman were responsible for the shooting and were seen fleeing the scene in an SUV.
  • At 3:05 a.m. in the 2700 block of South Wentworth Avenue, a 26-year-old man was sitting inside a vehicle that was parked at a gas station when he was shot in the hand. The victim was taken to Roseland Hospital in fair condition. A 38-year-old woman, who was also in the vehicle, was struck once in the hand by gunfire and was taken to U of C in good condition. The victim was unable to provide further details of the incident.
  • At 3:32 a.m. in the 11100 block of South Wentworth Avenue, a 29-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when he heard gunshots and felt pain. The victim was shot in the left wrist. He was treated by fire crews and taken to Roseland Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 3:45 a.m. in an unknown location, a 20-year-old man was dropped off at Roseland Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen in critical condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident.
  •  At 6:27 a.m. in the 800 block of East 89th Place, a 39-year-old man was inside a residence when he suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and died. Area detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.    

Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made in either shooting.
