Chicago weekend shootings: 12-year-old boy among 7 killed, 22 hurt
CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least five people were killed, and 22 others were hurt in weekend shootings across Chicago as of Saturday. The ages of the victims range from 12 to 51.
In one of the first shootings of the weekend, a 13-year-old boy was shot Friday night in the 400 block of East 50th Place in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood.
Chicago police said the boy was near the street when he was struck in the leg by gunfire just before 8:30 p.m.
He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition.
Less than an hour later, a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was found around 9 p.m., in the 8600 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.
Police responded to a person shot inside a residence and found the victim. Another man at the scene told officers the two were physically struggling over the firearm when it discharged.
No further injuries were reported.
A 34-year-old man was shot while exiting his car just before 10 p.m. in the 4500 block of South Fairfield Avenue in Brighton Park.
Police said the victim saw an unknown male offender approach for a gangway and fired shots in his direction. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left thigh.
Two other men were shot, one critically hurt while outside around 11 p.m. in the 2100 block of South Leavitt Street on the city's Lower West Side.
The men, 18 and 20, were outside when they heard shots fired and felt pain. Both suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. They self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where the 18-year-old was listed in fair condition, and the 20-year-old is in critical condition.

Friday
- At 6:58 p.m. in the 7500 block of South Paulina, a man, 51, was approached by an unknown offender who produced a handgun and fired shots. The victim was struck in the foot and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital in good condition.
- At 6:16 p.m. in the 7100 block of South University, a 40-year-old woman was struck in the leg by gunfire. The victim self-transported to U of C Hospital initially reported in good condition.
Saturday
- At 12:20 a.m., in the 1100 block of West 90th Street, officers responded to a person shot and found a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the arm. The victim was taken to Christ Hospital where in fair condition. Further investigation revealed that the victim was in a fight with a woman who produced a firearm and shot the victim. The woman was at the scene and was placed in custody. A weapon was also recovered. Police say the incident appeared to be domestic.
- At 1:33 a.m., in the 1700 block of West 71st Street, officers responded to a person shot and found two men who were stuck by gunfire. A 21-year-old man was shot in the elbow and ear, and a 19-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and leg. Both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. The victims were uncooperative with further details.
- At 3:25 a.m., in the 1100 block of South Mozart Street, a 29-year-old man was found outside on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was unresponsive and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
- At 5:12 a.m., in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street, a 29-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the left calf. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition but was uncooperative with responding officers. Police say the wound appears to be self-inflicted.
- At 11:58 a.m., in the 5000 block of West North Avenue, a 19-year-old man was outside when a black-in-color sedan stopped near the victim and an unknown offender began to fire shots in his direction. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg and was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition.
- At 12:25 p.m., in the 7300 block of South Dorchester Avenue, a 42-year-old man was in an alley when he was shot multiple times in the chest by an unknown offender. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
- At 2:35 p.m. in the 3900 block of West Ogden Avenue, a 43-year-old man was in a parking lot when he was shot multiple times. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
- At 6:35 p.m. in the 900 block of West 54th Street, a 27-year-old man was on the street when he was shot in the head and right leg by an unknown person. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 11:55 p.m., in the 1600 block of North Wells Street, a man, 26, was working inside a Walgreens store when a known offender in his late 20s entered and had an argument with the employee. Both pulled out a handgun and there was an exchange of gunfire. The victim suffered a graze wound to the chest and refused medical attention on the scene. The offender suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, head, and abdomen and self-transported to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.
Sunday
- At 12:45 a.m., in the 11500 block of South Vincennes Avenue, a woman, 41, was in an argument when a known male offender, 41, approached with a knife inside her residence. The victim produced a handgun and fired at the offender. The offender suffered four gunshot wounds to the torso and was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. The victim was not injured, and a handgun was recovered on the scene.
- At 1:35 a.m., in the 5200 block of South Pulaski Road, an 18-year-old man was driving in his vehicle when a grey sedan approached, and someone unknown fired shots from inside the vehicle. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the hip and torso and was taken to Christ Hospital in good condition.
- At 1:45 a.m., in the 5300 block of South Lake Park Avenue, a 29-year-old woman was inside a staircase when an unknown male offender produced a handgun and fired shots in the direction of the victim. The victim was shot in the left foot and taken to U of C in good condition.
- At 5:23 a.m., in the 2500 block of South Trumbull Avenue, two men, 23 and 37, suffered gunshot wounds throughout the body after a fight with a known offender while inside a residence. Both victims were taken to Mt. Sinai, where they are listed in critical condition. Area Four Detectives are investigating, an offender was placed into custody and charges are pending.
- At 6:40 a.m. in the 600 West Fulton Street, a 21-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his head. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under investigation by Area Three Detectives.
- At 2:58 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Irving Park Road, a 19-year-old man was on the sidewalk when he shot himself in the right leg. The victim was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in good condition.
- At 5:56 p.m. in the 800 block of West 71st Street, a 35-year-old man was in a parked vehicle when he was shot in the neck by an unknown person. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
- At 6:35 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Lowe Avenue, officers responded to a gunshot detection alert in the 600 block of West Marquette Road. Officers toured the area and found a 12-year-old boy a short distance away, on the street unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was taken to Comer Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
- 9:34 p.m. in the 5400 block of South Narragansett Avenue, a woman, 37, was walking on the sidewalk when a known male approached in a dark-colored SUV and fired multiple shots at the victim. The victim was struck ten times in the body and was taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead a short time later.
